Of Cicadas and Snowflakes

Here is a translation of the main verses of that old ditty that homesick South Africans hum, as they watch the snow fall in their expatterliness:

Far in the Old Kalahari

Up to the fat Malopo

Give me the old Kalahari

The old Kalahari, lo!

Wide lie the endless flatlands

Camel thorn tree and sand

Hermitic, reposeful world

It’s the old Kalahari land

Cicadas sing in the shrubs

the fiery sun to expel

red afrikaner oxen

at each and every well

Far in the old Kalahari

There the tough farmers hum

Give us the old Kalahari

Kalahari is the One!

…..

Give me the old Kalahari

The old Kalahari, lo!
